GCHR welcomes launch of DatNav, a new guide to help navigate and integrate digital data in human rights research

29/08/2016

From online videos of rights violations, to satellite images of environmental degradation, to eyewitness accounts disseminated on social media, we have access to more relevant data today than ever before. But integrating data collection and management into the day to day work of human rights research and documentation can be challenging, even overwhelming, for individuals and organizations.

The Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR) participated in the writing sprint which Amnesty International, Benetech and the Engine Room initiated to create DatNav, together with a group of 14 other experts from leading human rights and technology organizations around the world. GCHR highlighted the perspective of human rights defenders in the Middle East and North Africa region, providing strategic development expertise as well as content and case study development, while keeping in mind what would be most beneficial to human rights defenders who will eventually read the guide and use it in their day-to-day work.

Strengthening human rights research and documentation with digital data is key to keeping up with the fast pace of technology change and we hope this guide will help any techie, researcher, human rights defender, organisation and others to develop their work further.
