Zakiya Al-Barboori is a Bahraini political prisoner who was convicted in an unfair trial under Bahrain’s overly broad counter-terrorism law. Despite a wave of prisoner releases in March 2020 amid COVID-19 concerns, Al-Barboori was not among those freed. Human rights organizations, including the Gulf Center for Human Rights (GCHR), raised concerns that her continued detention, despite the release of others serving longer sentences, reflected a pattern of excluding human rights defenders and activists from humanitarian measures.
