On 23 March 2017, she was stopped at the airport on her way to Qatar for a family visit. Despite having received her boarding pass, she was interrogated for hours about her travel. On 23 April 2017, Al-Khamees was summoned by the Public Prosecution, accused of participating in a peaceful gathering in the Duraz area, an allegation later used to justify preventing her from traveling. On 5 September 2017, three military jeeps and a civilian vehicle arrived at her home to deliver a summons from the General Directorate of Investigations and Forensic Science, requiring her to appear the next day. On 6 September 2017, she complied with the summons and appeared for interrogation. After a 30-minute wait, she was questioned without a lawyer present about her whereabouts on 11 August and accused of participating in an unauthorized protest in Aali village. She was released shortly after.
