Dr Abduljalil Al-Singace
Dr. Abduljalil Al-Singace is a Bahraini academic, blogger, and human rights defender currently imprisoned solely for exercising his rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. He was sentenced to life in prison on 22 June 2011 for his role in the peaceful protests that occurred that year. On 08 July 2021, he began a liquid-only hunger strike in response to the confiscation of his manuscript on Bahraini dialects of Arabic, which he had taken four years to research and write. While in prison, Dr. Al-Singace has been subjected to medical neglect, with authorities failing to refill his prescriptions on time, or provide him access to other medical supplies or appointments. On these occasions, he has had to temporarily escalate his hunger strike to exclusively water in order to pressure authorities to provide him with his medication. He was held in prolonged solitary confinement during his imprisonment, and when transferred to a medical centre, he was unable to go outside, or have direct exposure to sunlight, or receive the physiotherapy he needs for his disability until early 2026. These conditions have led to the deterioration of his health. Dr. Al-Singace has been the subject of multiple joint letters to the leaders of Bahrain from dozens of human rights groups, including GCHR, calling for his immediate and unconditional release. Until his release, these groups have also called for his living conditions to be improved in order to meet international standards, for his medical neglect to end, and for his arbitrarily confiscated research to be transferred to his family.
Most recently, on 17 March 2026, 19 NGOs called on the Bahraini authorities to release Dr. Al-Singace on the 15th anniversary of his arrest in 2011.
