Ali Al-Hajee
Ali Al‑Hajee is a Bahraini human rights defender and former political prisoner who was detained by Bahraini authorities on 28 February 2025, following a police summons related to his social media activity. Accused of “misusing social media” due to posts about human rights, he was held under investigation at Dry Dock Prison for 11 days until his conditional release on 19 March 2025 under a residence guarantee (bond) for which the public prosecutor must be kept informed of his place of residence.
He previously spent over ten years in prison (from 2013 to June 2023) on convictions linked to peaceful protest, before being released under an alternative sentencing scheme. His detention in early March 2025 came amid heightened repression coinciding with Formula 1 testing in Bahrain, prompting alerts from the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders who urged his immediate release and emphasised the case as emblematic of the restrictive environment for activists.
