Abbas Moneim Al-Azzawi is an Iraqi civil society activist who was arrested while protesting at Wasit University. On 9 June 2022, Al-Azzawi was sentenced to one year in prison by the Kut Misdemeanour Court, with the sentence taking immediate effect. The complaint was filed by Dr. Ali Al-Obaidi, Assistant President of Wasit University for Administrative Affairs, who accused Al-Azzawi of showing disrespect toward university customs and officials for peacefully standing at the entrance of the university presidency. Al-Azzawi had previously led demonstrations with fellow daily wage workers from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, demanding implementation of Cabinet Resolution No. 315 of 2019, which calls for adjustments to their salary scale.
