Israa Al-Ghomgam
Israa Al-Ghomgham is a Saudi human rights defender from Al-Qatif, Eastern Province, who has been imprisoned since December 2015. She was arrested along with her husband, Mousa Al-Hashim, for participating in peaceful protests during the Arab Spring uprisings. In February 2021, she was sentenced to eight years in prison, followed by an eight-year travel ban, by the Specialised Criminal Court. Subsequently, the Specialised Criminal Court of Appeal reportedly added an additional five years to her sentence, bringing the total up to 13 years. Israa Al-Ghomgham was incarcerated in Al-Dammam’s General Intelligence Prison, where her health deteriorated due to inadequate medical care. Her case drew international condemnation due to the fact that the public prosecutor originally called for the death penalty in her case. (There are no current photos of her since the photo taken when she was child).
Al-Ghomgham was released on 6 August 2026.
