Alaa Mohammed Al-Siddiq

Alaa Al-Siddiq was an Emirati human rights defender and the executive director of ALQST for Human Rights. She was born in Sharjah on 18 June 1988 and died in a car accident in the United Kingdom on 19 June 2021. Her father, Mohammed Abdulrazzaq Al-Siddiq, a prominent academic and reformist, was arrested in 2012, leading to the stripping of his family’s citizenship by the Emirati authorities. Alaa Al-Siddiq activism began in 2011 when she signed the 3 March petition calling for democratic and political reform in the UAE. Following her father’s arrest, she moved to Qatar, where she obtained a master’s degree in public policy. In 2019, she relocated to the United Kingdom and continued her advocacy for human rights, focusing on prisoners of conscience in the UAE and the broader Gulf region. Alaa Al-Siddiq was also known for her opposition to the normalization of relations with Israel and her defense of the Palestinian cause. She was subjected to harassment by the UAE authorities, including surveillance and hacking of her electronic devices. In memory of her dedication to human rights, her birthday, 18 June, has been designated as “Alaa Al-Siddiq Day” by various human rights organizations.
