Mohammed Al-Abbsi
Mohammed Al-Abbsi, a Yemeni investigative journalist and human rights defender who had worked for outlets including Al-Thawra, Al-Sharea, and Al-Oula and reported extensively on corruption involving Houthi-controlled institutions and the war economy, died suddenly in Sanaa on 20 December 2016. Although initial reports attributed his death to a heart attack, an autopsy ordered by his family revealed exposure to a toxic gas, confirming he was likely poisoned. The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate and human rights organisations urged independent investigations. UNESCO’s Director-General called for a “thorough independent inquiry”, and calls have been made for an international probe, noting that Houthi authorities had labelled it a case of an “unknown person” despite incomplete investigations and outstanding questions regarding suspects and motives. In the absence of any record of judicial progress, criminal accountability, or closing of the case, his death remains unresolved and emblematic of the systemic impunity faced by journalists in Yemen.
