Samia Al-Agbry

Samia Al-Agbry, Yemeni journalist and human rights defender, has faced a prolonged campaign of defamation, judicial harassment, physical threats, and violent assault. She was subjected to an orchestrated smear campaign following a public speech on 31 December 2012 in al-Dali governorate, in which she criticised the fusion of “religion, military and tribes” as obstructing the dream of building a civil state. In retaliation, she was accused of insulting religion, and a formal complaint was filed against her with the public prosecution. Earlier, on 13 February 2011, while participating in a demonstration in Sana’a, she was physically assaulted and assaulted by plain-clothed individuals, believed to be state security agents, who tried to abduct her. She lost consciousness and was hospitalised for head injuries. Police present at the scene did not intervene. Samia lodged a complaint at Anasr police station afterwards. Since 2015, she has also endured online threats and intimidation, including death threats and accusations of belonging to extremist groups, forcing her to conceal her identity and to temporarily remove her Facebook page. More recently, in August 2023, she was dismissed from her academic post as head of the journalism department at Sanaa University when she publicly opposed gender-segregation policies imposed by the Houthi authorities.
