Yousra Ahmed Al-Nashiri, a Yemeni model and actress, was sentenced in November 2021 by a court in Sanaa to five years imprisonment on charges of alleged prostitution and drug use that have been widely denounced as baseless and politically motivated. On 12 February 2023, the Court of Appeal in Houthi-controlled Sanaa upheld the verdict in proceedings that flagrantly violated fair-trial guarantees, as the judgment was delivered without considering the defence’s submissions and without providing her lawyer with a copy of the decision. At the time, Al-Nashiri was absent from the hearing as she was undergoing treatment for cancer, which prison authorities had failed to adequately provide, forcing her to remain outside detention to access medical care. Despite her critical health condition, the judicial harassment continued, and no evidence has since emerged of her release or of any improvement in her legal situation. As of 2025, she remains under the shadow of this sentence.
