Akram Saleh Al-Walidi
Akram Saleh Al-Walidi is a Yemeni journalist who was abducted in 2015 by the Houthi group and detained in harsh and degrading conditions alongside three colleagues. On 11 April 2020, Akram Saleh Al-Walidi was sentenced to death by the Specialised Criminal Court in Sana’a, following a trial that lacked basic guarantees of due process. Despite filing an appeal on 22 April 2020, he was not brought back to court, in violation of the ruling by the Specialised Criminal Appeals Court on 06 November 2022. Since October 2020, Akram Saleh Al-Walidi was held in the Exchange House, a prison designated for detainees to be used in prisoner exchanges, where he was denied all contact with his family and legal counsel, amounting to enforced disappearance.
He was released on 16 April 2023 as part of a prisoner exchange between the Houthi authorities and the internationally-recognised Yemeni government.
