Rooj Al-Wazir
Rooj Al-Wazir, a Yemeni-American visual artist, writer and co-founder of the SupportYemen media collective, has become known for her creative and community-based resistance to drone warfare in Yemen. Through visual arts, photography, spoken word and advocacy, she has given voice to those living under drone attacks and documented the social and psychological impacts of covert strikes. She helped organise a union of bereaved drone victims and insisted that “real change comes through community organising,” noting that national measures such as a resolution criminalising airstrikes and an MP vote to ban drones would not have occurred without grassroots pressure. Al-Wazir also spoke out against the international community’s failure to investigate alleged war crimes, condemning the decision to block UN scrutiny as complicity in the violence. Her work highlights the intersection of art, memory, identity and activism, she uses creative storytelling not just to record injustice, but to inspire resistance and solidarity in fractured civic spaces.
