Rahmah Hujairah is a Yemeni journalist working for Yemen Today TV who was subjected to a widespread defamation campaign on social media in September 2017 after a photograph of her attending an award ceremony was published online. The campaign, led by radical activists on Facebook, accused her of behaviour allegedly “contrary to customs and traditions”. Although Hujairah was not arrested or detained at that time, the smear campaign placed her at serious risk, as online incitement in Yemen has often translated into offline threats and attacks against media workers. This case occurred in a context where press freedom had sharply deteriorated following the escalation of the conflict in 2015, with journalists facing intimidation, arbitrary detention and even enforced disappearance at the hands of both the Houthi de facto authorities and other armed groups.
