Mohammed Al-Baqer

Mohamed El-Baqer is an Egyptian human rights lawyer and the founder and director of the Adalah Center for Rights and Freedoms. He was arrested on 29 September 2019 while representing his client, activist Alaa Abd El-Fattah, during an interrogation at the Supreme State Security Prosecution in Cairo. Subsequently, Mohamed El-Baqer was charged in the same case as his client, accused of “spreading false news” and “joining a terrorist group”. On 20 December 2021, the New Cairo Emergency State Security Misdemeanour Court sentenced Mohamed El-Baqer to four years in prison for “spreading false news undermining national security”, a verdict that is not subject to appeal . The trial was widely criticised for lacking basic fair trial standards, including the defence team’s inability to access the 2 000 pages case file and the absence of the defendants and judge during the sentencing, which was delivered by a clerk. Mohamed El-Baqer was held in Tora Prison’s maximum-security wing, known for its inhumane conditions. On 19 July 2023, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi granted a presidential pardon to Mohamed El-Baqer, leading to his release on 20 July 2023.
