Ahmed Abdullah Al-Saad Al-Kuwari

Ahmed Abdullah Al-Saad Al-Kuwari is a Qatari internet activist known for his critical commentary on social media platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. On 19 January 2024, he was arrested by the Saudi State Security Presidency and deported to Qatar, where he was detained by the Qatari State Security Apparatus. He is currently held in Qatar’s Central Prison. On 25 July 2024, he was sentenced to five years in prison by the Court of First Instance, a sentence increased to thirteen years by the Court of Appeal on 10 October 2024. Under Qatar’s Penal Code, Anti-Cybercrime Law, and Press Law, the accusations involved propagating false news, degrading the reputation of the judiciary, causing social unrest, and opposing the Emir’s authority. The absence of assurances for a fair trial sparked concerns, and reports suggested that outside pressure significantly hampered his defense. On 28 March 2025, he began a hunger strike to protest his sentence, resulting in severe health consequences and hospitalization. His case serves as an example of Qatar’s restriction on internet expression.
