Ahmed Hassan Al-Zoubi

Ahmed Hassan Al-Zoubi is a Jordanian journalist, playwright, and satirical writer. He is also the founder and editor-in-chief of the Sawaleif website, which publishes articles related to local and international issues. After using his Facebook page to criticise authorities’ handling of the December 2022 transport truck drivers’ strike in Ma’an Governorate, he was charged with  allegedly “inciting sectarian and racial strife and inciting conflict between the sectors of the nation.” He was initially sentenced to two months in prison, but on 27 July 2023, the Amman First Instance Court annulled the initial sentence and ordered him to be imprisoned for a full year, in addition to imposing a fine of 50 Jordanian dinars (70 dollars) and requiring him to cover the costs of legal procedures. On 02 July 2024, Jordanian security forces arrested Al-Zoubi while he was with his wife and children on his way to his hometown of Al-Ramtha, in northern Jordan. He was imprisoned to serve a prison sentence issued against him in the previous year.

On 16 January 2025, the Amman Criminal Court’s Judge decided to agree to replace the prison sentence with a community service penalty, and he was reunited with his family that same evening.
