Sultan Bin Kayed Al-Qasimi

Sultan Bin Kayed Al-Qasimi is a prominent Emirati academic and human rights defender. He has been subjected to prolonged arbitrary detention and judicial harassment by the United Arab Emirates authorities. Sultan Bin Kayed Al-Qasimi was initially arrested on 20 April 2012 as part of the “UAE94” case, a mass trial targeting 94 individuals, including intellectuals and activists, accused of having ties with the al-Islah organisation. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison on 02 July 2013. Despite completing his sentence in April 2022, he remained detained under the pretext of “rehabilitation needs” and was later retried in the “UAE84” case. On 10 July 2024, the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal sentenced him to life imprisonment, equivalent to 25 years, along with 42 other individuals. Defendants, including Al-Qasimi, were accused of establishing and managing a clandestine terrorist organisation known as the “Justice and Dignity Committee”. However, many of the defendants had already been convicted in the “UAE94” case for similar charges, raising concerns about violations of the principle of double jeopardy. Al-Qasimi’s continued detention and retrial exemplify the UAE’s ongoing suppression of dissent and violations of human rights.
