Murad Ismael
Prominent Yazidi human rights defender Murad Ismael, co-founder of Yazda and president of Sinjar Academy, has long advocated for justice, accountability, and the safe return of Yazidis displaced by the 2014 ISIS genocide in Sinjar. On 24 March 2025, the Nineveh Criminal Court in Mosul issued an arrest warrant against him following a complaint by the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement, which accused him of insulting Minister Evan Faeq Jabro after he publicly criticised the ministry’s failure to address the ongoing crisis affecting Yazidi internally displaced persons. Ismael, who resides in the United States, stated that the warrant was issued without prior summons or opportunity to respond, describing the move as politically motivated and aimed at silencing dissent. He has vowed to challenge the case legally and continue his advocacy, asserting that Yazidis deserve dignity, security, and accountability.
