Dr. Sarah Ammar Al-Aboudi
Dr. Sarah Ammar Al-Aboudi was a lecturer at the College of Sport Education at the University of Basra and a respected member of her community in Basra Governorate, Iraq. On the morning of 27 November 2024, she was brutally murdered by her colleague, Muzahim Al-Tamimi, in the remote area of Umm Al-Rasas. Surveillance footage showed the perpetrator confronting Dr. Al-Aboudi as she exited a car, engaging in a heated argument before he fatally shot her. The killer then stole her documents and personal phone, using the latter to send misleading messages to her sister in an attempt to shift suspicion. Security forces arrested Al-Tamimi less than twelve hours after the crime. The perpetrator is notably the brother of Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani, which fueled numerous unconfirmed theories suggesting the murder was linked to Dr. Al-Aboudi having uncovered corruption involving the perpetrator and the governor’s wife, who is the perpetrator’s sister, concerning various projects in the governorate.
