Hussein Sabri

Hussein Sabri is a civil society activist from Karbala who has been repeatedly targeted due to his involvement in protests and outspoken views on corruption. On 17 December 2024, he was arrested following his opposition to a security campaign led by the Karbala Traffic Police Department that aimed to ban tuk-tuks in the city centre. At the time, Hussein Sabri was serving as the director of the Karbala branch of the Tuk-Tuk Drivers Union. The arrest was based on a lawsuit filed against him and an official report accusing him of incitement to disobey the law, under Article 213 of the Iraqi Penal Code No. 11 of 1969. The charges stemmed from a video in which he appeared alongside two others expressing dissent against the campaign. He was released the next day on bail of 5 million Iraqi dinars.

Sabri has participated in all protests held in Karbala, notably the October 2019 popular movement, which led to sustained harassment and unemployment. He has frequently used his Facebook account to denounce corruption and share his views on public issues. However, on 15 April 2025, he announced his decision to retire from political activism, citing fear of being targeted and the economic consequences of his advocacy. He sold his tuk-tuk and declared that he would dedicate himself fully to construction work after three years of unemployment linked to his activism.
