Zainab Rabie is a journalist and broadcaster who has been working for Al-Sharqiya satellite channel since November 2020. On 26 December 2024, she revealed on her Facebook page that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani had filed a lawsuit against her in both his official and personal capacities due to her critical posts, stating: “Today, I received notification of a lawsuit filed against me… due to my opinions and criticisms!” She affirmed her commitment to continuing her criticisms, particularly regarding violations of freedoms and rights, corruption, and the mismanagement of Al-Sudani’s government. Rabie is known for her often sarcastic commentary on social media, where she routinely denounces political repression and failures in governance. On 8 April 2025, she criticised the government’s response to the demands of educational staff, accusing it of loving “oppression, smoke bombs, and the humiliation of its people”. Notably, also on 26 December 2024, the Prime Minister’s office announced it would drop all lawsuits filed against some journalists, citing the approaching Eid Al-Fitr holiday and a meeting with media professionals.
