Shihab Alwan

Shihab Alwan, a Yemeni journalist, was arrested by Houthi forces in Sana’a in 2015 and held incommunicado for over a year. During his detention, he was subjected to torture and forced to sign a confession under duress. In 2016, he was sentenced to death by a Houthi-controlled court in a trial that lacked basic fair trial guarantees. His death sentence was later commuted to a prison term, but he remains incarcerated under harsh conditions. Shihab Alwan’s case exemplifies the broader pattern of arbitrary detention and abuse of journalists by Houthi authorities in Yemen.
