Hamad Al‑Olayan

Hamad Al‑Olayan is a former member of the Kuwaiti National Assembly who was targeted for his expression on social media. On 20 June 2024 the Criminal Court convicted him of “violating the powers of His Highness the Amir, criticising official decisions and misusing communication devices” including a tweet challenging the Amir’s authority and sentenced him to two years imprisonment. He was subsequently released on bail and placed under a travel ban pending appeal which was scheduled for 30 September 2024 alongside other former deputies (including Anwar Al‑Fikr and Mesaed Al‑Quariafa), the Court of Appeal reinstated his sentence after it had been annulled and he remains subject to restrictions reflecting the broader campaign of political repression following the dissolution of parliament in May 2024.
