Mir Sarkawt is a photojournalist working for the NRT satellite television channel in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. He was detained on 24 June 2025 in Sulaymaniyah by security forces while covering a news report in the city’s public market. The report focused on the deteriorating living conditions and weakened purchasing power of citizens due to delayed payment of public sector salaries. Sarkawt and colleague correspondent Ali Saleh were taken to the Internal Security Directorate where all their equipment, including cameras and mobile phones, was confiscated. They were held for six hours before being released with their equipment returned.
