Omar Al-Zayood

Omar Al-Zayood is a Jordanian publisher and owner of the news website Al-Hashimiyah News. On 17 March 2025 he was arrested in Amman, under the provisions of Cybercrimes Law No. 17 of 2023, following a complaint by former Prime Minister Bisher Al‑Khasawneh alleging that his outlet published an inaccurate report about him. The public prosecutor charged Al-Zayood with “inaccuracy and insulting the dignity of individuals” under the new law, which prescribes prison terms of three months to three years and fines ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 Jordanian dinars. His bail request was reportedly denied and his detention extended, marking a clear example of how newly enacted legislation is being used to restrict freedom of expression and to target media actors in Jordan. His case fits within a broader pattern in which Jordanian authorities have used overlapping statutory and regulatory tools, (including the Cybercrimes Law, the Penal Code, and administrative measures) to suppress the activities of journalists, human rights defenders and civil society organisations, particularly in the digital sphere.
