Hanan Al-Barasi
Hanan Al-Barassi was a Libyan lawyer and women’s rights activist known for her outspoken criticism of corruption and human rights abuses in eastern Libya, particularly those linked to Khalifa Haftar and his affiliates. On 10 November 2020, Hanan Al-Barassi was assassinated in broad daylight on a commercial street in Benghazi by unidentified gunmen. Just minutes before her death, she had posted a live video on Facebook criticising the actions of Haftar’s forces. Hanan Al-Barassi had previously received numerous death threats and had survived an assassination attempt targeting her daughter. Her murder sparked widespread condemnation from international human rights organisations, which called for an independent and impartial investigation into her killing.
