Mehdi Zagrouba is a Tunisian lawyer and human rights defender who was arrested on 13 May 2024 after participating in protests by lawyers against the detention of their colleague following a raid on the bar association headquarters. The Tunisian Bar Association reported that he bore visible marks of physical violence during his detention and alleged torture. The International Commission of Jurists and other human rights bodies called for an independent investigation into these allegations. While the Ministry of Interior accused him of verbal and physical assault on security officers, the case is widely seen in the context of broader repression of lawyers and critics in Tunisia. On 11 July 2024 the authorities released Zagrouba, although the investigating judge kept the case against him open and he remained subject to legal proceedings and restrictions.
