Bassem Al-Sheikh is an Iraqi journalist and editor-in-chief of Al-Dustour newspaper. On 02 June 2024, his home was raided by a force from the Anti-Crime Department with the intention of arresting him. Al-Sheikh was outside the house at the time, and the raid caused panic for his family. The raid came as a result of a lawsuit filed by the head of the Journalists’ Syndicate, which was related to an article Al-Dustour published that criticised the Journalists’ Syndicate, its policies, and its legal violations. The Syndicate had earlier revoked the permit of Al-Dustour, which Al-Sheikh described in a Facebook post as “an encroachment on the powers of the judiciary.”
