Khamis Al-Hatali is an Omani online activist. On 13 August 2021 security forces arrested him after he published on his Twitter account a video addressed to Haitham bin Tariq, the Sultan of Oman, declaring “We are the nation talking… You are an unjust person.” According to reports, he announced his intention the next day to raise a sign bearing the slogan “Haitham is the oppressor” at the Tharmad roundabout in Al-Suwaiq province. The video reportedly attracted wide attention. His arrest occurs amid a broader crackdown by Omani authorities on online activists, bloggers and social-media users who criticise the Sultan or governmental policies, a pattern denounced by human-rights organisations.
