Saud Al-Zadjali
Saud Al-Zadjali is an Omani writer and human rights defender known for his use of online platforms, including X (formally Twitter), to express opinions on social, cultural and public issues affecting Oman and to engage a broad digital audience in dialogue about citizen concerns and freedoms. In July 2021, Al-Zadjali became a target of online harassment and organised social media pressure campaigns calling for his prosecution, reflecting an environment in which digital expression is closely monitored and dissenting voices face intimidation or legal threats by authorities and government-aligned actors. In response to the online attacks and threats, Al-Zadjali publicly announced on 25 July 2021 that he would pursue legal action against anyone who threatened him for exercising his right to freedom of expression, underlining both the personal risks he faced and his commitment to defending digital civic space and the rights of writers and activists to speak without fear of reprisals. As of the latest credible information available, there are no public reports that Al-Zadjali himself has been formally charged or subjected to judicial proceedings in relation to his expression, but the targeting and online harassment he faced illustrate systematic pressures on writers and human rights defenders in the Sultanate.
