Nahyan Al-Badi
Nahyan Al-Badi is an Omani protester from the province of Saham who was arrested for taking part in peaceful demonstrations demanding economic reform, job opportunities and an end to corruption, and whose detention and subsequent release underscore ongoing restrictions on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression in Oman. Al-Badi, a young man then in the final year of his secondary studies, participated in the popular protests that began in Sohar on 23 May 2021 and spread to other provinces, where demonstrators called on the authorities to address unemployment, improve living conditions and carry out reforms. These protests were widely described as peaceful yet were met by security forces with arrests. Around 30 May 2021, the Royal Oman Police arrested Nahyan Al-Badi alongside other peaceful protest participants including Abdullah Salem Obaid Al-Badi, Abdullah Salem Abdullah Al-Badi and Mohammed Al-Qarini on a range of charges commonly used against peaceful demonstrators such as participating in a gathering of more than ten people without a permit, violating Covid-19 precautionary measures and other public order-related offences. He was detained for several weeks before being permitted to secure his release on bail on 12 June 2021, and the more serious charges against him were reportedly dropped with only lesser public order-related charges retained. There are no credible reports of further prolonged detention after his release.
