Alwi Al-Mashour
Alwi Al-Mashour, Omani civic activist and human rights defender, is a protest figure who participated in nationwide peaceful demonstrations that began on 23 May 2021 in Sohar, Oman, and later spread to Salalah, Ibri, Sur, Ibra and Rustaq. The protests were driven by demands for employment opportunities, social reform and an end to corruption, and were met by Omani authorities with a broad crackdown involving arbitrary arrests, excessive use of force and restrictions on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression in violation of international human rights standards. During these demonstrations Alwi Al-Mashour spoke publicly about the socioeconomic grievances motivating protesters and criticised structural factors, including labour and sponsorship practices, that he argued limited opportunities for Omani workers and contributed to inequality and frustration among youth. His public interventions took place in a context in which security forces systematically targeted protesters and sought to suppress coverage of the demonstrations, prompting condemnation from human rights organisations including the Gulf Centre for Human Rights and the Omani Association for Human Rights, which called on the authorities to respect fundamental freedoms. As of the latest confirmed reporting there is no public evidence that Alwi Al-Mashour remains in detention or has been formally charged, but his case illustrates the risks faced by civic activists in Oman amid an increasingly restricted civic space and ongoing repression of peaceful dissent.
