Nazanin Salari

Nazanin Salari is a human rights defender and lawyer from Shiraz, Iran. She has been actively engaged in defending fundamental rights, particularly those of women and children, through her legal work and professional leadership. She served as the head of the Human Rights Commission at the Fars Bar Association and participated in capacity-building workshops focused on legal rights and access to justice for marginalised groups, reflecting her longstanding commitment to human rights and the rule of law in Iran. During the nationwide Woman, Life, Freedom protest movement, Salari, alongside fellow lawyers, worked to support detainees, defend protestors and advocate for due process and judicial independence. In a principled stand in January 2026, she resigned from her position on the Disciplinary Court of the Fars Bar Association with a group of lawyers to protest the association’s failure to meaningfully defend the legal rights of arrested protesters, reinforcing her commitment to professional accountability and the independence of the legal profession. On 6 January 2026, Iranian authorities summoned Nazanin Salari and brought her before Branch I of the Shiraz Revolutionary Court on a series of serious, politically charged offences, including “collaborating with hostile states,” “gathering and collusion against national security” and “propaganda against the state,” reflecting a broader pattern of judicial harassment against rights defenders in the context of the brutal crackdown on protests beginning on 28 December 2025. In addition to these national security-focused accusations, separate charges were filed against her alleging “encouraging people to engage in corruption and prostitution” and “being present in public places without a religious veil” before Branch 112 of the Criminal Court, illustrating the use of vague statutory provisions to criminalise peaceful human rights work. Reports indicate that she has remained subject to these proceedings without transparent due process protections amid severe restrictions on independent reporting due to a nationwide internet shutdown, raising grave concerns about her legal status, conditions of detention and access to counsel.
