Mohammed Qasim Al-Taheri

Mohammed Qasim Al-Taheri was a Yemeni photo-journalist. He was killed on 02 September 2018 in Taiz, Yemen. On that night he had responded to a call to help transport a woman in labour to Muzaffar Hospital when he was shot by a sniper while standing next to his car outside the hospital. The bullet struck his neck from behind and exited through his cheek, indicating he was shot with a 9 mm round from a high vantage point in the direction of the Cairo Citadel, an area then controlled by an armed group known as the Abu al‑Abbas Brigade. According to investigations by local journalists and human-rights monitors the authorities never conducted a proper forensic or medical investigation and no credible hospital report or autopsy was ever provided. His family reportedly received threats that prevented them speaking out and were pressured to bury him soon after arrival at the hospital. Although no group officially claimed responsibility, the evidence and testimonies strongly suggest he was deliberately targeted because of his photographic documentation of humanitarian suffering and armed confrontations in Taiz’s old city. The failure of any credible investigation or prosecution has left the crime in impunity.
