Hiba Al-Kutbi

Hiba Al-Kutbi is a journalist and women’s rights activist from Yemen. She was forced to leave the country on 11 November 2024 following a coordinated social media campaign of death threats, incitement, and defamation targeting her independent reporting and activism. She and her husband, writer Salah Al-Wasai, fled from their home in Taiz, seeking refuge in rural areas before eventually going into exile under threats to their lives. The campaign cost her her job and caused both material and psychological harm. This targeting reflects a broader trend: the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate has documented dozens of violations against journalists, including arbitrary detention, threats, and forced exile, underscoring the increasingly hostile environment for media professionals, especially women, amid conflict and political fragmentation.
