Ghanem Khaled
Ghanem Khaled is an Iraqi political activist and a leader in the National House Party who has been targeted by the authorities for expressing his opinions on public affairs in a context of repression against dissent in Iraq. Khaled is active on social media, where he shares views on issues of public concern and advocates for justice, including through posts referencing the case of disappeared protester Sajjad Al-Iraqi. On 27 November 2025, he was arrested by members of the Counter-Terrorism Department of the Intelligence Directorate in Dhi Qar Governorate in connection with a previously filed case that had been reopened against him in what appears to be a punitive and arbitrary manner. He was released on 07 December 2025 without any formal charges. His arrest was linked to his online posts, despite the absence of clear criminal grounds. During his detention, Ghanem Khaled was reportedly subjected to ill-treatment and placed in solitary confinement. He later stated that he had spent eleven nights in detention before being released, while his personal belongings were not returned to him, in violation of legal procedures. Two additional cases related to his past online activity remain pending against him and may be used to intimidate him further.
