Mohammed Mubarak

Mohammed Mubarak is an Iraqi environmental activist and university political science student who has been arbitrarily detained in a context of increasing repression against freedom of expression in Iraq. Mohammed Mubarak is known for his volunteer work, including contributing to the establishment of a nature reserve for animals and participating in the organisation of the “Nasiriyah Reads” cultural festival. On 01 March 2026, he was arrested by security forces in Nasiriyah after posting a video on social media in which he expressed fears for his family in light of the escalating regional conflict. Despite subsequently issuing a public apology for any misunderstanding and deleting the video, he was detained by the authorities. According to local sources, Mohammed Mubarak remains in custody of the National Security Service in Dhi Qar Governorate. His arrest appears to be linked solely to his peaceful expression of opinion online. Civil society actors have raised concerns that he could face serious charges, including terrorism-related accusations, which carry severe penalties.
