Saber Chouchen

Saber Chouchen is a Tunisian activist, political commentator and online content creator who has faced judicial persecution for publicly criticising President Kais Saied and denouncing the authoritarian drift of the Tunisian authorities. Known for his outspoken social media interventions and political commentary, he became one of several online voices targeted under Tunisia’s expanding crackdown on dissent, particularly through the use of Decree-Law 54 and cybercrime-related prosecutions. According to reports documented by the Gulf Centre for Human Rights and testimonies circulated by Tunisian activists, Chouchen was arrested after publishing online statements criticising state institutions and the president’s policies. Security forces reportedly subjected him to prolonged interrogation regarding Facebook publications and political commentary viewed by the authorities as hostile to the state. Human rights defenders condemned the case as another example of the criminalisation of peaceful expression and warned that Tunisian authorities were increasingly targeting ordinary citizens, bloggers and online commentators alongside journalists, lawyers and opposition figures. His prosecution occurred in the broader context of deteriorating freedom of expression in Tunisia following President Kais Saied’s consolidation of power in July 2021, including the dissolution of parliament, restrictions on judicial independence and the repeated use of vaguely worded legislation against critics. Civil society organisations stressed that the charges brought against Saber Chouchen appeared directly linked to the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of opinion and expression protected under international human rights law. At the time of writing, Saber Chouchen remained subject to ongoing judicial proceedings linked to his online expression, with no confirmed final judgment or sentence reported in the available sources.
