Jawher Channa
Jawher Channa is a Tunisian activist, feminist voice and human rights defender known for her engagement in social justice causes, political activism and solidarity campaigns in support of Palestine. She has participated in numerous demonstrations and public campaigns criticising restrictions on civil liberties and advocating for freedom of expression and political rights in Tunisia. Alongside her husband, activist Wael Naouar, she became active in grassroots mobilisation linked to pro-Palestinian advocacy and broader opposition movements challenging the increasingly repressive political climate under President Kaïs Saïed. Tunisian authorities repeatedly targeted activists associated with these movements through surveillance, interrogations and judicial harassment. In October 2024, Jawher Channa was arrested together with Wael Naouar and activist Louay Khamassi following a demonstration commemorating the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation and expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. According to human rights organisations and local observers, the protest was largely peaceful, yet authorities accused the activists of offences including forming a criminal group, disturbing public order and assaulting police officers. On 07 March 2026, Tunisian authorities arrested five activists participating in the Steadfastness (Sumud) Flotilla initiative, including Jawher Channa and her husband Wael Naouar, in connection with investigations into fundraising and organisational activities linked to pro-Palestinian solidarity campaigns. Authorities reportedly accused the activists of financial and organisational offences, while supporters and human rights organisations denounced the arrests as part of a broader crackdown targeting activists involved in solidarity initiatives for Gaza and criticism of the authorities. Reports indicated that the detainees were subjected to lengthy interrogations and continued judicial pressure following their arrest. Human rights groups highlighted concerns regarding the increasing criminalisation of peaceful activism and solidarity movements in Tunisia, particularly activities connected to Palestine and opposition mobilisation. As of the latest available information, Jawher Channa remains subject to ongoing judicial proceedings linked to her political activism and involvement in pro-Palestinian solidarity initiatives, including the Sumud Flotilla.
