Hafiz Mohammad Shaker is the son of prominent Omani human rights defender Habiba Al-Hanaei. His case gained national and regional attention in 2016 when reports emerged that he was facing the possibility of deportation from Oman. Public support for his case became one of the factors leading to the arrest of writer and cinema critic Abdullah Habib on 15 April 2016. Habib had publicly defended Shaker and highlighted his situation online, which, according to information received by GCHR, contributed to the Internal Security Service (ISS) summoning and immediately detaining him. Habib’s support for Shaker was cited alongside his broader writings defending civil rights in Oman.
