General: Gathering held in Brussels in solidarity with detained MENA WHRDs/HRDs

On 16 December 2022, the Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR) organised in co-operation with the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), the Syrian Center for Media & Freedom of Expression (SCM) and ALQST for Human Rights a gathering in support of detained WHRDs/HRDs in the whole Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The gathering was supposed to be held in front of the European Union Parliament in Brussels but due to a general strike that took place on the very same day, it was held inside a private hotel room.

The gathering, which was the 2nd of its kind this year, entitled “Free all Detained Women/Human Rights Defenders in MENA - International Mechanisms including the UN & EU should act now!”, featured speeches by Khalid Ibrahim, Executive Director of GCHR, Alexis Deswaef, Vice President of FIDH, and Assaad Al-Achi, Board Member of SCM. Lina Al-Hathloul, Head of Monitoring & Communications for ALQST, was unable to attend at the last minute due to the strike.

The speakers sent another united call to all the oppressive governments in the MENA region to release detained WHRDs/HRDS and all other prisoners of conscience. Also, they called on the international mechanisms including the EU and UN systems to act immediately to ensure their release and ask governments in the MENA region to respect public freedoms including freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly.

Photos of detained human rights activists from countries across the MENA region were shown during the event.
