International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) – RGWS and Emergency Fund for Women Journalists

The Reporting Grants for Women’s Stories provide opportunities for women journalists to pursue international stories of importance through gender-sensitive coverage of underreported topics.

  1. Grants will average $5,000 USD.
  2. Grants will be awarded to cover reporting-related costs including travel (flights, ground transportation, drivers), logistics, visa fees, and payment for fixers/translators.
  3. All applications must be filled out online via the IWMF’s online application system.

     The IWMF will accept applications twice-yearly. Please keep this in mind when creating proposed project timelines. Due to the large influx of applications, the IWMF cannot consider time-sensitive proposals. Please refer to the application close date for each application cycle, and expect grants to be disseminated 6 – 10 weeks following the application close. Applicants may apply concurrently for Reporting Grants for Women’s Stories and the Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists.

THE IWMF EMERGENCY FUND PROVIDES WOMEN JOURNALISTS WITH:

Small grants for psychological and medical care for incidents directly related to threats and crises caused by one’s work as a journalist;

Three months of temporary relocation assistance in the event of crisis or threat;

Legal aid to counter threats of imprisonment or censorship;

Non-financial assistance in the form of information about additional access to resources.

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE IWMF EMERGENCY FUND, CANDIDATES MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

  1. Be a staff or freelance woman reporter, working in any medium, whose primary profession is journalism;
  2. Have worked full-time as a journalist within six months of applying for assistance;
  3. Apply for assistance with a crisis situation directly connected to work as a journalist.
