Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee
Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee is an Iranian accountant, writer, and staunch human rights defender renowned for her activism against the practice of stoning and her powerful literary voice. She was first arrested on 06 September 2014 after authorities discovered a handwritten, unpublished story critiquing stoning and her Facebook posts, and was sentenced to six years in prison for “insulting religious sanctities” and “propaganda against the state”, enduring 17 days of blindfolded interrogation, threats and violent treatment, and later transferred between Evin, Qarchak and Amol prisons under harsh conditions before being released on 8 April 2019 after serving most of her term (though briefly rearrested in late 2016). After several additional arrests and sentences totaling over three years, she was released in May 2022, only to be rearrested on 26 September 2022 at the onset of the nationwide “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests following Mahsa Amini’s death. Her home was violently raided, personal belongings confiscated, and she was taken to undisclosed detention centres before being charged with “assembly and collusion against national security” and “propaganda against the regime”. In April 2023, she was handed a combined sentence of six years for assembly and collusion and one year for propaganda, alongside a two‑year travel ban, a two‑year prohibition on political associations and confiscation of her mobile phone. She refused to sign a pardon plea or attend appeal hearings, and in July 2023 her sentence was reduced on appeal to five years, which she is currently serving in Evin Prison. Yet she remains a vocal advocate, continuing to speak out for justice and the rights of prisoners from within prison walls.
