Mohammad Seriwa
Mohammed Seriwa is a Jordanian teacher and civil society activist who has faced repeated judicial harassment due to his online expression in support of teachers’ rights and union activities. On 2 April 2020, the Amman Magistrate’s Penal Court rejected for the fifth consecutive time a request to replace his three-month prison sentence with a fine. Seriwa, along with fellow teachers Layla Hadidoun and Bakr Al-Qatawneh, was prosecuted under Jordan’s Cyber Crime Law for social media posts defending the Jordan Teachers’ Syndicate (JTS) and criticizing official education policies. Human rights defenders, including lawyers representing the JTS, have emphasized that Seriwa’s posts merely reflected his opinion and posed no criminal threat, yet the authorities continued to refuse alternatives to imprisonment.
