Dr Nasser Bin Ghaith
Dr. Nasser Bin Ghaith is an Emirati academic and human rights defender currently imprisoned in the UAE. In March 2017, Bin Ghaith was sentenced to 10 years in prison for online comments he made criticising human rights violations in the UAE and Egypt. He has undertaken multiple hunger strikes in protest of his sentence and its violation against his freedom of speech, leading to the deterioration of his health. In December 2023, Bin Ghaith was among the 84 defendants charged in the widely-criticised “UAE84” case, which utilises fabricated terrorism charges in order to illegally extend the sentences of the accused, none of whom have committed any new offences. As a result, on 10 July 2024, Dr. Bin Ghaith was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
