Hamsa Hasim Mohsen Al-Hasnawi

Hamsa Hasim Mohsen Al-Hasnawi was an Iraqi human rights activist, media professional and National Security Advisor of Wasit Governorate. On 07 October 2025, Al-Hasnawi was assassinated in front of her home in the Al-Amiri area of Kut, the capital of Wasit Governorate, when two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle fired seven bullets at her while she was sitting inside her car. Before her appointment as National Security Advisor, she had worked for several years at Wasit TV and later joined the Wasit Governorate Water Directorate. Al-Hasnawi was pursuing a doctoral dissertation at the time of her death and was known for her commitment to public service and her defence of social justice. Following the attack, the Minister of Interior ordered the creation of a task force to investigate her assassination. Her brother, journalist Amir Al-Wasti, stated publicly that she had received threats before her killing and that he had provided information about influential figures involved to the authorities. A colleague described her as “a symbol of giving and dedication to work… a struggling human rights activist who dedicated her voice and pen to the causes of truth and justice.”
