Gulf Centre for Human Rights Observed the Trials of Journalist Reem Khalifa and the Teacher Association

Beirut, 3 December, 2011 – The Gulf Centre for Human Rights observed the trial of independent journalist Reem Khalifa and also the trial of some members of the administrative committee of the Teachers Association in Bahrain. The two hearings have been held on Wednesday morning, November 30, 2011 before the Lower Criminal Court. Deputy Director of the GCHR, Khalid Ibrahim was present at both Hearings.

Reem Khalifa’s lawyer, Sayed Mohsen Al-Alawi called on the judge to stop the trial until the lower criminal courts conclude in relation to the complaint submitted by the journalist Reem Khalifa on the negligence of the Public Prosecutor for two cases filed by herself and her husband, Dr. Mansor Al-Jamri, in the mean time processing the lawsuit filed by her opponents who are pro-government. The judge refused to halt the trial and adjourned the trial to 15 December 2011.

The next hearing, devoted to the trial of members of the administrative committee of the Teachers Association in Bahrain, has been held before the very same court.

The defense team asked the judge to adjourn the trial to give them time to get copies of the files of the defendants related to the case filed against them.

The judge adjourned the trial to 9 January 2012.
