Abbas Ali Aziz

Abbas Ali Aziz is an Iraqi protester who, along with three others, was sentenced to death following accusations related to an attack in the Aziziyah district on 30 June 2021. According to a statement issued on 11 March 2022 by the Media Center of the Supreme Judicial Council, the four protesters, identified as Kadhim Hadi Kadhim, Mohammed Atiya Hussain, Abbas Ali Aziz and Hussain Saddam Hashem, were accused of agreeing and participating in an attack on the Aziziyah power distribution station and of throwing a grenade at protection personnel, which caused the death of Captain Ali Abdulhussain Shayesh after shrapnel hit his head and chest, and also injured two other police officers, Nassar Sabih Tayeh and Ghazwan Abdulkarim Hassan. The judicial statement claimed that the defendants openly admitted to committing the act before both the investigator and the investigative judge after being provided with legal guarantees, and clarified that the case would automatically be sent to the Court of Cassation for review in accordance with Iraqi law, which makes all sentences preliminary and subject to appeal within 30 days. However, according to lawyers and colleagues close to the protesters, Abbas Ali Aziz and the others were subjected to torture and forced to confess to the officer’s killing, raising serious concerns about the fairness of the proceedings and the use of coerced confessions in capital cases.
