Abdelghani Al-Shamiri
Abdelghani Al-Shamiri, the former head of information at Yemen’s state radio and television, has been directly targeted amidst mounting attacks on media freedom and freedom of expression in Yemen. In September 2014, the Gulf Centre for Human Rights reported that military forces seized control of key state media institutions, including Yemen TV, Seba TV and Eman TV, as well as the premises of Suhail TV, suspending broadcasting and detaining staff. That same period saw the homes of several journalists searched or shelled, including that of Al-Shamiri, whose residence was raided in Sanaa. These actions form part of a broader systematic assault on the press, prompting widespread self-censorship, fear of reprisals, and the concealment of journalistic identities. Such incidents underscore the perilous environment for journalists and media workers in Yemen, where the deterioration in press freedom has persisted over more than a decade.
